The Hunger Games Trilogy: Introduction
There are some books which become a worldwide sensation and then are made into movie adaptations. Take the example of the Harry Potter and the Twilight series. The Hunger Games Trilogy, on the other hand, belongs to the other set of books who I only hear about once I learn that the movie adaptation has become really popular. So when a friend told me about “this amazing movie trailer called The Hunger Games Trilogy” that was spreading like wildfire on YouTube, I knew I had to check these books out.
Well, 10 days and three books later, I can guarantee you that The Hunger Games Trilogy is one of the best books I’ve ever read. And believe me, I’ve read a lot!
Before I go on with this book review of The Hunger Games Trilogy, I must admit that while reading the books, I was instantly reminded of the similarity with the movie titled, The Condemned. Both the movie and The Hunger Games Trilogy share the same basic plot of a fight for survival till death. But unlike the movie, the books have a thousand more things to offer the reader. Ever since the novels were first published, The Hunger Games books have been translated into 26 different languages and rights of production have been sold in 38 countries. A film adaptation of The Hunger Games Trilogy has just been released to critical acclaim.
The Hunger Games Trilogy: Summary of The Hunger Games Books
The Hunger Games Trilogy consists of three books; The Hunger Games, Catching Fire and Mockingjay and is told in first person through the eyes of its 16 year old protagonist, Katniss Everdeen. The story in The Hunger Games Trilogy opens in the nation of Panem that was formed after the destruction of North America by an apocalyptic event. The nation of Panem consists of a wealthy Capitol and twelve surrounding, poorer districts. Initially, there were 13 districts but one of them was destroyed in a rebellion against the Capitol.
As a punishment for that rebellion, every year the Capitol organizes an event among the 12 districts; an event in which the participants (or “tributes”) must fight in an outdoor arena controlled by the Capitol, until only one remains. One boy and one girl between the ages of 12 and 18 from each district are selected by annual lottery to participate in this annual event called The Hunger Games.
“The rules of the Hunger Games are simple. In punishment for the uprising, each of the twelve districts must provide one girl and one boy, called tributes, to participate. The twenty-four tributes will be imprisoned in a vast outdoor arena that could hold anything from a burning desert to a frozen wasteland.
Over a period of several weeks, the competitors must fight to the death. The last tribute standing wins!”
The 1st book in The Hunger Games Trilogy introduces us to the main protagonist of the novel, 16 year old Katniss who belongs to District 12 and one who has volunteered to take part in the 74th Annual Hunger Games in place of her younger sister, Primrose.
Also selected from District 12 is Peeta Mellark, a baker’s son whom Katniss knows from school, and who once gave her bread when her family was starving. There has been only one previous winner from this particular district and hence, many people view this event as a means of inviting death to their doorstep.
As the two young children from District 12 prepare themselves for this cruel competition, they are drawn closer to each other and their friendship evolves with time. With every passing of the dice, the two friends must use every ounce of the strength and survival skills to ensure they are not consumed by the cruelty and hate around them. This is the basic plot of The Hunger Games Trilogy and each book explores a different angle of the plot and brings it to life. I will not disclose more details about The Hunger Games Trilogy and I think this little teaser will suffice for you.
The Hunger Games Trilogy: My Thoughts on The Hunger Games Books
One of the most intelligent, addictive and compelling reads in recent times, The Hunger Games Trilogy moves along at a breakneck speed and leaves you gasping for more at the end of it. I finished off all 3 books within 10 days and believe me, it took every ounce of my strength not to stay awake all night in order to finish the books at one go. The Hunger Games Trilogy is that addictive so make sure you have enough time on your hands to finish them all at once.
The author, Suzanne Collins has a very easy style of writing that ensures that you get into the roles of the characters at a very early stage and it’s really no wonder then why The Hunger Games Trilogy has become such a favourite with teens and parents alike. The plot is fast, pacy and has the right pauses at the right places.
Overall, my impression of The Hunger Games Trilogy is a very positive one and I would definitely recommend it to my readers. However, on that positive note, I should also point out that The Hunger Games Trilogy is not a book for the masses so those who’re looking for vampire-loves-vampire type of a plot may be in for a bit of a disappointment. Some of you may also be offended with the concept of children being involved with violence, so again, The Hunger Games Trilogy is not for you folks.
The Hunger Games Trilogy: Customer Feedback and Reader Reviews
If you feel that my review of the hunger games trilogy is a little biased and full of praise for the author, then I can assure you that it’s not just me. “I consider The Hunger Games trilogy to be a great accomplishment for Collins and a true classic for both teen and adult readers of both sexes…”
“Fabulous books; could not put them down!!!! These are a must read!! Very well written, it really grabs the reader….”

Good Review
Thanks for the comment…glad to know you liked it
Good to add one more author to my list of must-reads. Thanks for introducing me to these books. The basic premise – of tributes – seems to have been taken from the bull-dancers of Crete of the Theseus story
Hi Suresh,
Glad to know I could help you find a nice book to read. I’ve not read the Crete of the Theseus book that you’ve mentioned but will definitely check it out
Hey Amandeep,
Completely agree with you. When people were comparing this trilogy to the Twilight series, I was kind of curious to know what it would be like, and hadn’t expected it to be such an interesting book. I have just read the first one and looking forward to reading the other two, but the first book itself makes it clear that the Hunger Games is a much better book than the Twilight books, plot-wise, and in terms, of the writing too.
Great Review from you……Looking forward to read reviews for more books from you
Amruta
Hey Amruta,
I absolutely second your thoughts when you say The Hunger Games is much, much better when compared to the Twilight series. It’s an absolutely riveting read and one of the best plots I’ve ever seen!
